Every time a new technology comes there is much expectation
of it . Sometimes , sometimes expectations are not met. When transferring data
from your laptop to your USB , how many times have you wished you would
transfer faster . USB 3.0 claims to have solved this problem. Supposed to have
SuperSpeed (4.8 GBPs) . When each version USB creators claim that this
particular version is released faster . And so it is with USB3.0 . But in the
case of USB 3.0 seem to have delivered.
It also uses less energy. So if the device is in an idle
state , then the device does not drain power . USB 3.0 is backward compatible
which means that if you have a USB 2.0 port on your USB 3.0 will work as well
as a USB 2.0 on that port. It also means you can connect USB 2.0 on a USB 3.0
port, but the performance will be that of USB 2.0. Unlike its predecessor USB
3.0 is bidirectional which means you can read and write data simultaneously .
If you need the USB 3.0 to really work , then you need a new
cable and new host adapter at least. The USB 3.0 cable is different from the
other USB cables. Using more wires to one thing and therefore the cable tends
to be thicker . Another thing is that usually has a blue insert . The connector
of the computer has the SS symbol on it . Even the connector used in the end of
the device is different from the other . You can also give more power to the
connected device ( 900mA ) .
The problem with USB3.0 compatibility is that when it was
released only very few devices have the ability to use their potential. So the
previous version of the desktops , laptops, etc do not have USB 3.0
specification . For example , if you are using a computer with Windows 7, then
chances are you will not get support . But , do not worry as there is a
solution to solve this problem. You have
to download and install the Windows drives from net. If you are using Windows
8, then you should not have a problem as USB 3.0 is compatible with it.
Assuming you are using Windows 8 here are some ways you can
make sure your device supports USB 3.0 is not only compatible , but that works
to your specifications
- Check the cable to see if it is appropriate.
- In the device manager check the device information. Windows should have listed the driver as USB3 host controller. Open Device Manager , find the controller under Universal Bus Driver . If you see a "USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller description, then it is sure that windows recognized the driver as a USB3.0.
- Make sure the USB 3.0 Hub that is connected to your device appears correctly in the device manager . Sometimes windows can report unsupported hubs as functional and nonfunctional make your device
- Make sure your firmware is updated regularly from the manufacturer's site . The same goes for the driver and your system BIOS .
For Mac device steps are similar
There are several programs available in the market that can
help in controlling the compatibility of USB 3.0. As you check the
compatibility of USB 3.0 USB 3.1 is on the horizon with twice the capacity of
USB 3.0.
